VIPP participants visited Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes as part of the new course "Discovering Michigan."

As part of the new VIPP course "Discovering Michigan," participants visited Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes. There they were able to experience the beauty of the dunes, as well as learn about the dunes' history and legend.

Spartans pursuing degrees in engineering, public health, agricultural economics, and other fields are gearing up for two weeks of action research in Malawi, the "Warm Heart of Africa." The hands-on work is a key part of the third annual Frugal Innovation Practicum, offered by the Global Center for Food Systems Innovation, and gives students the opportunity to apply what they've learned about solving food systems challenges.

Mayors Virg Bernero of Lansing and Mark Meadows of East Lansing will host the 11th Annual Mayors' Ramadan Unity Dinner - "United in Strength - Solidarity Against Hunger" on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing.
The deadline for purchasing tickets for this event is Friday, July 7, 2017. Prices for tickets are:
Students - $15
Individual - $25
Family - $80 per family of 4

Every year, MasterCard Foundation Scholars elect a new Scholars Council Representative. After a nomination and campaign process, a Scholar is chosen to hold this position for a one-year term. The newly elected Representative is Jackie Umurerwa, an undergraduate nursing student expecting to graduate in December 2019.

Growing up in Zimbabwe, MasterCard Foundation Scholar Panashe Mayangamutse dreamt of becoming an engineer. Now, she is looking forward to returning to Africa to apply what she's learned at Michigan State—to positively affect the engineering profession, her community, and the world.

Dr. Ryu developed an idea to help students learn classical Japanese. Instead of simply memorizing conjugation tables and charts, she wanted her students to sharpen their ability to recognize grammatical patterns by playing an engaging game. She credits the Delia Koo Endowment award for helping her experiments get started and creating more opportunities for her to apply for other grants.

GenCen is proud to see WGS major and MasterCard Scholar Naomi Kamitha featured in the 2017 CAL Dean's Report! Naomi has traveled thousands of miles from home to come to MSU where she is an Honors College student majoring in Women's & Gender Studies in the hopes of one day returning to her home continent to advocate for gender-inclusive policies.

Thomas Jayne, a University Foundation professor in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and co-director of the Alliance for African Partnership, was requested to testify before the House Committee on Agriculture on June 7 concerning "The Next Farm Bill: The Future of International Food Aid and Agricultural Development."
