Biography: Dr. John Bonnell works in Michigan State University’s (MSU) International Center as the Program Director of the Tanzania Partnership Program, a collaborative alliance of local and international organizations dedicated to improving local livelihoods and promoting community resiliency in Tanzania. John also serves as Co-PI of the Innovation Scholars Program (in Malawi) through the Global Center for Food Systems Innovation. In each of these roles John works with academic staff at MSU and at partner universities, particularly in Africa, to design and implement research and capacity development programs that improve the well-being of individuals, institutions, communities, and systems. Dr. Bonnell is a practitioner and scholar of international higher education. His research and praxis include the role of higher education in developing countries, educational and workforce development systems, faculty development, organizational transformation, and international academic partnerships. He has conducted educational research and development projects in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Ghana. Prior to joining MSU, Dr. Bonnell served as a faculty member and head of department at a private university in Kenya. Dr. Bonnell holds a PhD from MSU in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education, with specializations in African Studies and International Development.

Biography: Jennifer Brewer is the International Program Coordinator for the Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID) and Program Manager for the Tanzania Partnership Program (TPP). As CASID International Program Coordinator, Jennifer coordinates the development and submission of international development grants, manages the Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Program, coordinates the center’s degree programs, and provides support for institutional strategic partnerships. In 2017, Jennifer was appointed Project Manager for TPP, MSU’s first Partnerships for Sustainable Community Development initiative. As TPP Manager, Jennifer helps facilitate a collaborative alliance of local and international organizations as they work towards co-developing solutions to challenges for Tanzanian communities including inequities in girls’ educational access and attainment, poor maternal and reproductive health, and unequal earning opportunities for women.
Prior to her work with CASID and TPP, Jennifer developed and coordinated research projects on contraceptive use and early pregnancy recognition among low-income women in the U.S. for the MSU College of Human Medicine for six years. She has also coordinated research on new cancer drugs for the MSU Breslin Cancer Center including patient enrollment and monitoring of a phase one clinical research cancer trial. In 2012, she served as Program Director for an MSU Epidemiology Department research project on breast cancer occurrence among young white and African American women that was funded by the National Institute of Health. She recently (2015-17) served as the coordinator for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program’s Scholars Council, providing support to student members at higher education institutions in the U.S., Canada, and Africa.
Jennifer holds a Masters in Sociocultural Anthropology and has accumulated more than ten years of field research experience in health, development, gender, and youth in the U.S. and sub-Saharan Africa. Her publications have appeared in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Journal of Women’s Health, and the American Journal in Preventive Medicine, among other academic journals. Jennifer is currently in the process of earning a doctorate degree in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education and holds a certificate in Global Program Management.
